Jellal Fernandes in Fairy Tail is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version and Robert McCollum in the English dub. Namikawa’s ability to shift between warmth and intensity suits Jellal’s complex arc from antagonist to reluctant ally, while McCollum brings the same brooding gravitas he has lent to other morally layered characters throughout his career.

About Daisuke

Daisuke Namikawa (浪川 大輔) is a Japanese voice actor, actor, and singer born in Tokyo, Japan. He began performing at the age of eight after joining the Komadori Group, a children’s theater company with a focus on voice work. His early start gave him a strong technical foundation, and he has since built one of the most extensive and varied careers in the Japanese voice acting industry, accumulating over 450 credited roles across anime, film, and video games.

Though Namikawa is capable of a broad range of performances, he is particularly associated with young heroes who carry emotional weight — characters defined by internal conflict, quiet determination, or a sense of tragic nobility. Jellal Fernandes fits squarely within that space. The character’s journey from villain to an earnest, guilt-ridden figure seeking redemption called for a voice that could convey both menace and sincerity, and Namikawa delivered across the full run of the series and its sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. He also voiced Jellal’s Edolas counterpart, Mystogan, in the same productions.

In 2014, Namikawa left his former agency Across Entertainment to establish his own talent agency, Stay Luck, signaling a new phase of creative independence in his career. He is also the official Japanese dubbing voice for American actor Elijah Wood and Canadian actor Hayden Christensen, and made his directorial debut with the live-action film Wonderful World in 2010. He has won recognition at the Seiyu Awards, including a supporting actor award at the 4th ceremony.

Critical Reception

Namikawa’s portrayal of Jellal Fernandes has been consistently well-regarded by fans of the series. His ability to inhabit both the character’s darker early episodes and the more sorrowful, redemption-focused later arcs gave Jellal a sense of continuity and depth that resonated with audiences throughout the long run of the anime. On MyAnimeList, Jellal ranks as one of the more popular supporting characters in Fairy Tail, a standing that reflects, in part, the strength of the Japanese voice performance. Namikawa himself noted the significance of the role after the conclusion of the final season.

About Robert

Robert Howard McCollum is an American voice actor, television host, and producer based in Dallas, Texas. Born in Bentonville, Arkansas, he studied at Trinity University in San Antonio before pursuing a career in media. He has been working in anime dubbing for nearly twenty-five years, voicing over 300 roles through his long association with Funimation Entertainment, making him one of the most prolific and recognizable voices in the North American anime industry.

McCollum is particularly well-suited to characters who operate in moral grey areas — figures who are commanding, conflicted, or imposing. His work as Jellal Fernandes in Fairy Tail, which ran from 2011 through 2019, is among his most recognized roles. He reprised the character in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, with Ian Sinclair filling in for the simuldub version of episode 10. McCollum also voiced Jellal’s counterpart, Mystogan, in the same production.

Outside of voice acting, McCollum served as a host and producer at WFAA-TV’s Good Morning Texas in 2009, and continues to work as a producer and director of corporate communications in the United States and United Kingdom. He is the creator of The Inside Man, an IT security training action series, and directed the historical audio drama podcast 1865.
