The shonen superhero anime series My Hero Academia will return with season 7 in April. But will you be able to watch it on Netflix?

The short answer is “yes,” but there’s a catch. In most places around the world, you will need a VPN if you want to watch on Netflix. We’ll explain in more detail below. But first, let’s take a closer look at this series.

What is My Hero Academia?

My Hero Academia started out as a Japanese take on the classic American superhero story. However, after six seasons, three movies (with a fourth coming in August 2024), and a handful of OVAs, it has evolved into a complex and deep series.

Fans have watched some heartbreaking moments, as Deku and his friends confronted not only deadly villains, but also the hidden, dark secrets of the pro heroes. We have seen characters grow and learn as they trained to become better heroes.

Kohei Horikoshi started the manga in 2014. Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump still publishes the series. The current Final War story arc/ Final Act Saga would appear to be the grand finale for the series.

The anime series began in 2016, although it has taken some breaks to avoid overtaking the manga. According to reports, season 7 will likely cover the Star and Stripe and U.A. Traitor arcs, as well as possibly at least part of the Final War arc.

In most places, you will need a VPN to watch My Hero Academia on Netflix. (Note: We didn’t check every possible location.)  If you need a VPN, here’s how to do it:

How to Watch My Hero Academia on Netflix if The Anime Isn’t Available in your Country

As of this article, My Hero Academia is available on Netflix in Singapore. However, if the anime series is geo-locked in your area, a VPN can help.

The following method works on both desktop PCs and mobile phones or tablets:

    1. Purchase (or start a free trial) of a VPN. I can confirm that NordVPN works for this purpose.
    2. In the settings, choose Singapore as your location.
    3. Fire up the VPN and wait for it to do its magic
    4. Once you’re connected, navigate to Netflix (browser or app
    5. Search “My Hero Academia” in the Netflix search bar and you should see the anime pop up.

Enjoy! Please note that if your Netflix library doesn’t update to reflect the country you selected in your VPN, you may have to clear the Netflix cache first and try again.

To do this on mobile, go to settings -> apps -> Netflix -> clear cache.

To do this on PC, you have to clear the cache in your web browser.

Why is My Hero Academia Not Available in All Countries’ Libraries?

If you subscribe to Netflix, all of this regional blocking may seem a bit strange. Why allow paying customers to watch a series in one country, but not block it in another?

The answer is simple — licensing. In recent years, many anime fans have turned to online streaming as a convenient viewing option. Anime companies found that they could make money by selling licenses. In other words, streaming companies agree to pay for the legal right to show a specific anime series.

Streaming companies also compete with each other for these licenses — every series in Netflix’s library is one that’s not in Crunchyroll’s.

In order to uphold the terms of the licensing agreements, streaming companies lock, or block content regionally or by country.

A VPN is a legal way for subscribers to avoid these problems.
