Universal Studios Japan’s Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End collaboration is now open, and the launch came with unusually emotional praise from the anime’s Japanese voice cast.

USJ held a press preview and opening ceremony on May 29, 2026, one day before the public opening of the Frieren program on May 30. The limited-time collaboration is scheduled to run through January 11, 2027 as part of Universal Cool Japan 2026.

What Opened at USJ?

The collaboration is built around three main experiences:

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Story Walk – Journey of Memories, a walkthrough attraction where guests follow the story on foot
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Restaurant of Memories, a themed restaurant experience
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End x Story Ride – A Journey with the Bird Monster and the Carriage, a story ride experience connected to the anime’s world

USJ describes the Story Walk as the first entry in its new Universal Story Walk format. In practical terms, that means the headline attraction is not just a photo spot. It is designed as a story-driven walkthrough that places guests inside recreated scenes and emotional memories from the series.

The Voice Cast’s Reaction

Atsumi Tanezaki, the Japanese voice of Frieren, and Nobuhiko Okamoto, the Japanese voice of Himmel, attended the opening ceremony. Both described the experience as deeply immersive, especially the moments built around familiar locations, character encounters, Himmel’s statue, and Frieren’s flower-field magic.

Tanezaki said there were many moments where she nearly cried, including seeing the real-feeling distance to the rock Fern pierced and watching Frieren show the flower-field magic. Okamoto similarly said the cityscape and scenery felt like the anime, and that Himmel’s statue and the flower-field magic were so beautiful he nearly cried.

Those comments are the new angle here. Earlier English coverage already explained that USJ was getting a Frieren walkthrough, restaurant, and ride. The opening preview confirms how the attraction is being sold emotionally: not as a thrill-only anime overlay, but as a memory walk built around the series’ quiet sense of time, loss, and reunion.

Why Frieren Fits a Story Walk

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is not only popular because of battles or fantasy spectacle. Its strongest scenes often come from returning to memories after years have passed, realizing what a past journey meant, or seeing a place differently after someone is gone.

That makes the Story Walk format a smart fit. A walkthrough can slow guests down in a way a standard ride cannot. The PR Times report emphasizes guests “walking” through the story, and the cast comments point to physical distance, life-size presence, scenery, sound, and food as part of the emotional effect.

Travel Notes for Fans

The collaboration runs at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka from May 30, 2026 to January 11, 2027. Travelers should still check USJ’s official pages before visiting, because attraction access, restaurant availability, timed entry, tickets, and operating details can change by date and crowd level.

If you are already planning a Universal Cool Japan trip, the Frieren program is likely to be one of the highest-demand anime draws of the season. The opening-day message from the cast is clear: this is meant to feel less like a simple crossover and more like stepping into the party’s remembered journey.
