Mecha anime fans who are looking for something different ought to watch Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury online.

The series re-imagines the Gundam franchise. For one thing, The Witch from Mercury is the first major Gundam series in four decades to feature a female lead (not counting spin-offs).

While many Gundam series are all about war drama, The Witch from Mercury includes an element of (unofficially lesbian) school romance. Of course, the mecha battles are still there (in the form of duels). But you also get corrupt corporate politics, and the ethical pitfalls of Gundam technology.

We can help you find this series. We will also explain how to use a VPN to watch anime.

About the Series

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury at Crunchyroll - Sotsu/ Sunrise/ MBS

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury doesn’t take place in the primary Universal Century timeline.

So, forget what you know about Zeon, the Red Comet, etc. Even the Gundams are technically GUND-ARMS, space medical technology adapted for combat use (but often mistrusted and banned).

Similar to previous Gundam series, Witch from Mercury (nicknamed G-Witch) features factions of Earthians (humans from Earth), and space colony Spacians. In addition, various powerful corporations are involved.

The witch in G-Witch is Suletta Mercury. In this series, “witch” is used to describe illicit Gundam pilots. As others have pointed out, some scenes even symbolically resemble metaphorical “witch trials.”

In the beginning, Suletta transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, a corporate school for mecha pilots and mechanics. She turns out to be an unusually good mecha pilot. This leads to suspicion, and other complications. (Her past is also a major spoiler.)

Suletta soon develops a relationship with Miorine Rembran, the tsundere daughter of a company president. Their relationship is often sad and rocky, as they face difficult situations which pull them apart.

Series History

Like most Gundam series, Witch from Mercury is “anime-first,” rather than adapted from a manga or light novel. Season 1 ran from October 2022 to January 2023; while Season 2 ran from April to July 2023. The series has 25 episodes, including the Prologue.

Online reviews have been mixed. Some Gundam fans loved the school setting, politics, and the romantic plot. Others hated the school romance with its frequent downer moments, and wanted more battles.
