For whatever reason, Digimon has never been quite as popular as that other Japanese monster taming, collecting, and training video game/ anime series. As a result, it can be trickier to find shirts for the franchise.
However, we found 10 really good shirts featuring this challenger to Pikachu’s Pokemon empire (p.s. check out our guide explaining how to watch the Pokemon series in order).
But first, let’s take a look at this series.
About Digimon
The Digimon story begins with a handheld Digital Monster virtual pet game, which was created by Bandai and WiZ in 1997. Bandai was also responsible for the similar Tamagotchi toy, and Digimon was intended as a counterpart.
The first Digimon Adventure anime series began in 1999. It was partially based upon the handheld games, but also the Digimon video games.
In Digimon Adventure, the main characters are transported into the virtual reality Digital World by gadgets called Digivices (a portmanteau of digital and device). These kids are led by a boy named Tai (either Tai Yagami in Japan, or Tai Kamiya in the United States).
As with Pokemon, they tame various digital monsters, which can Digivolve into higher forms. However, fans praise Digimon for having a deeper story, with better character development, and more interesting conflict.
For example, the main antagonists are evil, demonic Digimon with plans for both the digital and real worlds. Naturally, the kids must defeat the demon Digimon and their corrupted Digimon minions.
Digimon Adventure was followed by Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Adventure tri. In 2020, the series received a grand finale in the movie Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.
Digimon also had numerous spin-offs, including Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier, Digimon Data Squad, Digimon Fusion, Digimon Universe: App Monsters, and Digimon Ghost Game. (Note: Some of these can be hard to find.)
Finally, the whole TV anime series was rebooted with Digimon Adventure (2020).

1. Digimon Crest Pocket, ZenPlus
This simple shirt lists off all of the main characters from Digimon Adventure. In the original series, there are eight DigiDestined kids, and each one has his or her own Crest. Like the Elements of Harmony, the Crests are powerful symbols which represent the kids’ core virtues or values — Courage, Friendship, Love, Sincerity, Knowledge, Light, Reliability, and Hope.
This shirt was originally created by cosplay/ clothing company Cospa. According to reports, the shirt has been discontinued, so supplies are limited and it could sell out.

2. Digimon Adventure, Etsy
This shirt features some of the characters from the 1999 version of the Digimon Adventure anime series. Tai is in the middle, and Yamato “Matt” Ishida is next to him. (You can tell that this is the 1999 version, and not the 2020 version, because Matt’s shirt is green, not purple.)
They are surrounded by Digimon, including Tai’s Agumon, and Matt’s Gabumon.

3. Angewomon, Amazon
If you’re a fan of Angewomon, you might want to get this shirt.
One thing which helps Digimon stand out against its competition is its unique take on ‘mon evolution, or Digivolution. Digimon evolution has been a subject of debate for a long time. Some fans like the creative evolutions, while other people question the logic of it.
For example, angelic Angewomon can evolve from the catlike Gatomon, who is directly below her on this shirt. Angewomon is an Ultimate-level Digimon.

4. Mimi in Hawaii, Etsy
In the short film Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!, Mimi Tachikawa takes a vacation in Waikiki, Hawaii, where she pretty much misses all of the action. However, she does send Tai a nice postcard.
(To be fair to Mimi, the adventure takes place during a school holiday. As a result, she’s not the only one unavailable to help.)
Within the U.S., distributor Saban Entertainment added the scene to Digimon: The Movie (2000). The U.S. movie was a combination of several short films.

5. Digimon Character Poster, Amazon
This one features a whole lot of Digimon tamers, and their Digimon partners. Given the large number of characters represented, there’s a good chance that your favorite character is probably on there.
The top row features Joe Kido, Koushiro “Izzy” Izumi, Matt, Tai, Sora Takenouchi, Takeru “T.K.” Takaishi, and Mimi.

6. Tai and Agumon, Kohl’s
This shirt features Tai and Agumon, the Ash Ketchum and Pikachu of the Digimon universe.
Of course, as any fan will tell you, Digimon is not the same thing as Pokemon. But it’s hard not to make comparisons when these two are represented a lot in the merchandise.
The shirt contains writing in kanji and katakana, with Digimon Adventure above Tai’s head. Tai’s and Agumon’s names are also on the shirt.
Although Kohl’s has many physical stores across the U.S., this item may not be available near you. You can get it shipped within the U.S. However Kohl’s does not ship internationally.

7. Digimon and Crests, Amazon
This T-shirt design features various different Digimon, as well as the Crests of their tamers. It’s a colorful, crowded shirt.
The Crests serve a couple of purposes on the show. For one thing, they can help trigger certain kinds of Digimon evolution. They also have been shown to have other powers which can help tamers.

8. Mimi Cosplay Cropped Tee, Etsy
This cosplay shirt is a replica of the cropped tee that Mimi wore during Digimon Adventure 02. During the sequel series, she stopped wearing the Western-themed red dress and pink cowboy hat from earlier. (She was a bit older, and had probably outgrown it.)
Although this could be part of a Mimi cosplay, it could also be worn in non-cosplay situations. It doesn’t just shout Digimon to the general public. But other Digimon fans might recognize it.

9. Digimon Survive, Amazon
This shirt is from the Digimon Survive visual novel/ RPG released in 2022.
Digimon Survive is completely separate from the story established in Digimon Adventure, with new human characters in a different scenario. While the basic “monster taming in an alternate universe” concept is still there, the game has been described as darker than the original. Characters can die. It has also been compared to Danganronpa, because of the mystery/ survival aspects.

This shirt features Takuma Momozuka and Agumon from Digimon Survive. Teenager Momozuka is the main protagonist in the game. Naturally, his partner is Agumon.

Final Thoughts
Digimon shirts are not as common as Pokemon shirts. But perhaps, the rarity makes them more interesting.
