On June 30th, 2019 Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) was broadcast on TV all over Japan. Throughout the film, Tenki No Ko: Weathering With You commercial tie-ins played during the breaks. However, what most people were waiting for was the reveal of the first scene of Tenki No Ko: Weathering With You which played at the very end of the broadcast.
One of the things I love most about Japan is that many people both young and old still regularly watch television. In Japan, we still receive monthly television guides showing us the upcoming specials and films. Hundreds of thousands to millions of people around the country can all be watching the same thing at the same time. Because of that, there’s a sense of connection in Japan that I feel is lost in most Western countries.

NOTE: I apologize for the low audio quality. I didn’t have a way of recording this off of my television, so I had to resort to filming it with my DSLR.
Hodaka: This is the story about the world’s secret that only she and I know.
Hodaka: Instinctively and wishing so strongly, she passes through the gate.
Hodaka: That scene. What I saw on that day, now it feels like just a dream. But it wasn’t a dream.
Hodaka: In that summer, on that sky, we changed the shape of the world.
What is Weathering With You About?
What does this scene tell us about the story of Weathering With You? There are a few things that can be noted, some of which I covered in a previous article: Top 3 Tenki No Ko: Weathering With You Story Predictions.
The most important reveal in this trailer is that not only does Hina have supernatural powers of controlling the weather, she herself is likely a supernatural being. In the scene, Hodaka says “she passes through the (Torii) gate”, as she clasps her hands in front of a red Torii. In Japan, Torii are gates which are used to mark the entrance of sacred places like Shinto shrines and divide the realms of gods and men. My interpretation of this opening scene is that Hina is an incarnation of a weather god that passes through the realm of the gods into Tokyo, Japan. For what purpose? We’ll have to watch the film to find out.
