About Ikki Tousen
Ikki Tousen is very loosely based on the classic, historical Chinese novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The main characters are all descendants or “reincarnations” of great and powerful warriors from the end of the Han Dynasty. Ikki Tousen references many historic events, and the show’s rival schools are also based on the factions from the Three Kingdoms era.
However, to be honest, a lot of people probably watch the series for the mixture of sexy girls and fighting.
Be warned: The series features a lot of fanservice, especially in the later seasons. It earns a TV-MA rating, and Crunchyroll labels it as Mature.
Series History
The series began with a seinen manga which ran from 2000 to 2015. The first anime adaptation came out in 2003. This was followed by sequels:
- Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny (second season, 2007).
- Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians (third season 2008).
- Ikki Tousen: Xtreme Xecutor (fourth season 2010).
After the fourth season, several OVAs came out:
- Ikki Tousen: Shugaku Toshi Keppu-roku (2011)
- Ikki Tousen: Extravaganza Epoch (2014)
- Ikki Tousen: Western Wolves (2019)
Finally, a three-episode fifth season, Shin Ikki Tousen, came out in 2022.

1. Crunchyroll
Crunchyroll has two Ikki Tousen OVAs — Ikki Tousen: Extravaganza Epoch, and Ikki Tousen: Western Wolves. The OVAs are available in Japanese with subtitles, or dubbed in English.
The streaming service also lists Shin Ikki Tousen on a separate webpage from the Ikki Tousen OVAs.
How to Watch Ikki Tousen on Crunchyroll via VPN
This method works on both desktop PCs and mobile phones or tablets.
- Purchase (or start a free trial) of a VPN. I can confirm that NordVPN works for this purpose.
- In the settings, choose United States as your location.
- Fire up the VPN and wait for it to do its magic
- Once you’re connected, navigate to Crunchyroll (browser or app)
- Search “Ikki Tousen” in the search bar and you should see the anime pop up.

2. Funimation
Even after the merger, Funimation still offers some anime programs that Crunchyroll doesn’t have. This may change in the future, if the two services continue to combine their libraries.
However, as of December 2022, Funimation has seasons 1, 3, and 4 (Ikki Tousen, Great Guardians and Xtreme Xecutor) of Ikki Tousen.
You can watch Funimation in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. Outside of those regions, you will need a VPN.

Google Play doesn’t say if the episodes are subtitled or dubbed. But subtitled shows usually say “Original Japanese Version” on them.

5. Amazon
Amazon offers several ways to watch Ikki Tousen, but a lot depends upon your location.
If you are in Japan, Amazon Prime Video has all five seasons of Ikki Tousen, plus three OVAs.
A few of these episodes are available for free. Most of the episodes are available to stream by bundling with Docomo’s d Anime Store. Some can also be rented directly through Amazon.
However, all of these options require some form of Japanese payment information (yes, even the free ones).
In the U.S., Amazon has a streaming page for Ikki Tousen, but none of the episodes are currently available. However, you can buy a Blu-ray or a DVD.
