If you’re a fan of the shonen anime series Black Clover, you will probably want to watch the Black Clover movie.

Although the film won’t come out until March 31, we do already know where you will be able to stream Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King online. We also know which theaters will have the movie.

This article will also explain how to use a VPN, such as NordVPN, to watch more anime legally.

About Black Clover

Yuki Tabata started the Black Clover manga series in 2015. It features a boy who wants to be the next Wizard King.

Unfortunately, in a world where pretty much everyone has magic, Asta apparently has none. Instead, he develops incredible physical abilities through intense training. He also has an anti-magic grimoire, and wields anti-magic weapons.

The manga was adapted into a TV anime in 2017. Since then, there have been 170 episodes, divided into four seasons. There hasn’t been a new episode since March 2021. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited the next adventure.

Black Clover Movie Details

The movie was first announced in 2021. A couple of promo videos have also been released.

Through these videos and other announcements, we now know that the movie will debut a previously unseen antagonist, former Wizard King Conrad Leto. He’s performed by Toshihiko Seki, the voice of Muzan “Michael Jackson” Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

According to reports, Conrad Leto was the 27th Wizard King, who rebelled against the Clover Kingdom. (Julius Novachrono is the 28th Wizard King.)

Incidentally, you won’t find details about the movie by reading the manga, because the movie is not canon. (With a few exceptions, this is a common problem with shonen anime movies.)

List of Places to Watch the Black Clover Movie

  1. Netflix
  2. In Theaters
  3. Crunchyroll (sort of)

Note: All of the places mentioned are legal, licensed options. Our list does not include pirate sites.

Where to Watch the Black Clover Movie

1. Netflix

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King at Netflix

Netflix will be the licensed streaming distributor for the Black Clover movie in most places worldwide.

Using NordVPN as an international passport, I found the Black Clover movie on Netflix in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Singapore, South Africa, Canada, and Brazil.

Ironically, this includes places where Netflix currently doesn’t offer the Black Clover TV anime series. Singapore residents can watch two seasons of the series. Netflix Japan has the full series, but with no translation. In most other places, you will either need another streaming service (such as Crunchyroll) or a VPN if you want the full story.

(* Note that Netflix is not available in Russia, Crimea, Syria, China, or North Korea.)

If you find yourself in a location where you have Netflix access, but you can’t get the movie and/ or the TV series, you’re not stuck. You just need to get a VPN to watch both the movie and the show on Netflix.

How to Watch the Black Clover movie on Netflix via VPN

This method works on both desktop PCs and mobile phones or tablets.

  1. Purchase (or start a free trial) of a VPN. I can confirm that NordVPN works for this purpose.
  2. In the settings, choose Singapore as your location.
  3. Fire up the VPN and wait for it to do its magic
  4. Once you’re connected, navigate to Netflix (browser or app)
  5. Search “Black Clover” in the Netflix search bar and you should see the anime pop up.

NordVPN banner (Nord VPN)

I’ve had no trouble using this method and I still use NordVPN to watch anime from various Netflix country libraries daily.  Enjoy! Please note that if your Netflix library doesn’t update to reflect the country you selected in your VPN, you may have to clear the Netflix cache first and try again. To do this on mobile, go to settings -> apps -> Netflix -> clear cache. To do this on PC, you have to clear the cache in your web browser.

Pros

  • Good language options
  • A large library of both anime and non-anime content

Cons

  • Limited access to the TV series

Language options: Japanese with English subtitles. Other subtitle options unconfirmed, but likely.

2. In Theaters

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, info. for special manga only available in Japanese theaters - from the Black Clover movie website

If you’re in Japan, you will be able to watch Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King on the big screen.

Unfortunately, if there will be any Black Clover movie screenings outside of Japan, they haven’t announced them (yet). It’s possible that major anime conventions will have screenings.

As a streaming company, Netflix has been reluctant to do any movie theater releases, except for some major blockbusters. However, Black Clover will get a limited “Roadshow” release in Japan.

The Black Clover movie website has a list of participating movie theaters from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

Pros

  • Movies look good on a full-size cinema screen with theater-quality speakers
  • Moviegoers in Japan will get a special “volume 23.5” manga book, featuring stuff from the film

Cons

  • You can’t pause it, rewind, or adjust the sound
  • Limited screenings (for now)
  • The Japanese movie screenings will likely be untranslated

Language options: Japanese

Price: Depends upon local ticket prices

3. Crunchyroll

Black Clover (TV series) at Crunchyroll

Technically speaking, Crunchyroll won’t have the Black Clover movie. But personally, I find it hard to watch an anime movie if I’m not familiar with the TV series.

Unfortunately, Netflix has limited access to Black Clover. If you want the whole series, you will probably want to watch it on Crunchyroll.

Not only does Crunchyroll have the series, it has a separate webpage for the dubbed version. You can also watch the silly, chibi spin-off series, Squishy! Black Clover. Of course, you might need a VPN to watch Crunchyroll in some places.

Pros

  • Watch the TV series before you watch the movie
  • A huge library of recent and classic anime

Cons

  • May be geo-locked in some locations (a VPN can help with this)

Language options: Japanese with English, German, Latin American Spanish, European Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic subtitles.  English dubbed.

Price: Free, limited-viewing account option available. 14-day free-trial of premium account. Fan level, $7.99/ month. Mega Fan, $9.99. Ultimate Fan, $14.99.

Conclusion

You’ll notice that we didn’t include any DVD or Blu-ray information, as it’s too soon for any discs to be printed or even pre-ordered.

However, I hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect when the Black Clover movie comes out.
