Taki Tachibana

Taki is a high school teenager who must balance his work and social life while pursuing a future career in architecture. However, Taki’s life takes a dramatic twist as he finds himself inside Mistsuha Miyamizu’s body. After finding out their dilemma, Taki must work alongside Mitsuha to resolve their body switch problem.

While kind-hearted and hardworking, Taki is quick to anger, blunt, and sometimes perverted while inhabiting Mitsuha’s body. Behind these faults lies a boy with a determination to help those in need, a trait that follows him into his adult years.

Mitsuha Miyazumi

She is a female high school student who serves as her town’s priestess in her family shrine. At the same time, Mitsuha doesn’t enjoy her rural life because of her father’s stern desires and the criticism she receives as a shrine maiden. Mitsuha then states that she wants to be reincarnated in her next life as a boy and live in the city. Even though she achieved her goal by body-switching with Taki, she eventually learned about other issues that would spell doom for her and her entire town.

Mitsuha is a supportive and organized girl. Yet because her father mistreats her, Mitsuha is insecure and takes belittlement without the thought of retaliating. However, thanks to Taki, she becomes bolder and more confident enough to face her father.

Miki Okudera

Miki Okudera is one of Your Name’s side characters and works at an Italian restaurant with Taki Tachibana. At the beginning of the movie, Miki is Taki’s crush. Miki loves wearing beautiful clothes and boasting about her good looks. She has a girly personality. Despite her charm, Miki has a smoking addiction and finds it difficult to stop.

Tsukasa Fujii

Tsukasa Fuji is a cautious boy with a stern personality. He’s also one of Taki’s best friends and grows concerned for his friend whenever Mistuha takes control of Taki’s body. Despite being concerned for Taki’s well-being, Tsukasa wants what’s best for his friend and is there to support him to the bitter end.

One such example includes Taki going along with Taki to find the “girl” he dreamed of meeting. In his adult years, Tsukasa is a florist and marries someone who has a crush on Taki.

Yotsuha Miyamizu

Despite her young appearance, Yotsuha is an independent, energetic, and organized individual who wants to improve her knowledge about difficult topics in life. She is more dedicated to her duties than her sister, but she finds boredom in them too. Yotsuha always looks out for her sister, even if she thinks ill of her at times.

However, fate later plays an unwelcoming hand in Yotsuha’s life, and it’s up to her sister and her friends to change that future.

Katsuhiko Teshigawara

Katsuhiko Teshigawara is one of Mitsuha’s friends with expertise in machinery and explosives. Though his parents are never named, Katsuhiko worked under his father as a construction worker. Despite being a wiz at machinery, Katsuhiko had a crush on Mistsuha but wasn’t brave enough to share his feelings toward her.

Despite not getting with the girl of his dreams, Katsuhiko went to great lengths to support Mitsuha by stealing explosives and helping the villagers evacuate their residents.

Toshiki Miyamizu

He is Mitsuha and Yotsuha’s father, who pursued politics as he didn’t want anything to do with his wife’s traditional lifestyle. He’s also a stern businessman and maintained his status as Itomori’s mayor for four years. While the film’s conclusion doesn’t discuss his whereabouts, he’s morally responsible for his town’s evacuation during the Comet Tiamat incident and has received criticism for his residents’ survival.

Toshiki was a stern and rude father to his children, especially Mitsuha, whom he’d criticize over the simplest things like her posture. Not only did Toshiki have a terrible bond with his daughters, but his wife’s mother also found him unappealing because he abandoned his priestly duties after her daughter’s death.

Your Name Synopsis

Your Name was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Furthermore, the film was released in Japanese theaters in late 2016 and later came to the United States in early 2017. The film was critically acclaimed, broke numerous box office records, and grossed over ¥41.44 billion ($380.15 million) worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing anime film of all time. Before its release, Shinkai released a light novel adaptation of the film and later a visual guide. Both sold well.

The story follows Mitsuha, who is not fond of her rural town life and her family’s traditions. Mitsuha wishes to be a boy living in the city in her next lifetime. Next, we learn about a boy named Taki Tachibana who struggles with balancing work and school life. He wishes to pursue architecture in the future. 

However, their worlds suddenly intertwine as both Taki and Mitsuha awaken inside the other’s body. While adjusting to their new lifestyles, Taki and Mitsuha must collaborate and discover a solution to their problem. As the two start to impact the other’s lives through their individualized actions, a darker threat slowly enters the fray to cause them more problems.
