From Tokyo Game Show 2019, one of my favorite games was The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3. This has been my favorite JRPG series over the past decade and possibly even surpasses Persona 4 in my books.
Interestingly, the game takes place after the end of a civil war. While most games take place in the heat of large events, this game begins at the end of the series’ climax.
Rarely does a JRPG begin in such a time of peace, but the story writers pulled this off masterfully, showing the tensions that arise after one side loses and has to live with that loss.
Sometimes JRPG series can get dull or repetitive, but the Trails of Cold Steel always manages to stay fresh with each release, leaving me wanting more and more.
The bonding system is simple and leads to enjoyable/playful cut scenes. However, where the game truly shines is in its dynamic battle mechanics. This is one of the only game where I truly look forward to every battle. Read my full Trails of Cold Steel 3 review on KeenGamer.
