About Lydia

Lydia Marie Mackay is an American actress born in Fort Worth, Texas. She began her voice-over career in the late 1990s after auditioning for Funimation’s Dragon Ball Z, and has since become a mainstay of the English anime dubbing industry, working primarily with Funimation, Crunchyroll, and OkraTron 5000. Over the course of her career she has voiced more than 200 characters across anime and video games. In addition to her voice work, she holds a BFA in Theatre Arts from Texas Wesleyan University and an MFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University, and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Performance in the Department of Theatre at Texas Christian University.

At TCU, Mackay teaches courses in Auditioning, Voice Over, Stage Movement, Stage Combat, and Devised Theatre. She is a member of the Actor’s Equity Association and the Society of American Fight Directors, and is also a certified yoga teacher. Her philosophy on voice acting emphasizes the full physical and emotional engagement of the performer — a perspective informed by her extensive background in live theatre and stage combat.

Mackay is perhaps best known to international audiences for her long-running role as Boa Hancock in One Piece. Her extensive portfolio of commanding, mature female characters — including Trisha Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, Madam Red in Black Butler, and Ultear Milkovich in Fairy Tail — demonstrates the same range of warmth and authority that she brings to Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
